May Update

Hey, awesome readers!

Just wanted to share some cool updates with ya’ll. There’s so much going on for me this month, so I’m doing my best to take one thing at a time. You ready? Here we go!

Website Redesign

If you have been hanging out at my blog for a while, you’ll notice I just did a huge overhaul of my website. Yes, I did it all by myself. πŸ™‚ I am very proud, especially since I used a free WordPress theme, and I only spend about $45 per year on my domain + mapping it from my host (Network Solutions) to WordPress. It took me several hours to get everything just right, but I am pleased with the overall design. Hope you guys like it too!

TODAY: Special Event

One of my YA author friends is hosting a Facebook event all day long today, and you can join the event by clicking HERE. Other authors will be “taking over” during the day, including yours truly at 3:30pm PST. We’ll have some cool giveaways, so stop by—you just might win something!

Buzz Bookstore Excerpt Contest

I am trying to get my work “out there” even more this year, especially since my Spirit Lake series is now in the hands of my publisher, Cosby Media Productions. Something I discovered is an Except Contest, hosted by Buzz Bookstore. If I win, I will get three months of free exposure on the Buzz Bookstore site, which would be AMAZING!

Would you do me a favor and watch my video and then give it a share or two? Every bit helps! Check it out below:

Spirit Lake Review Opportunity

And speaking of getting my work “out there,” there is a special review opportunity for my debut novel, Spirit Lake! You can read my book for FREE in exchange for an honest review. To sign up to review my book (I REALLY need some reviews, too!), click HERE.

A HUGE Thank You to LIEP Promotions for hosting my book and providing the opportunity for book reviews. πŸ™‚

Current Projects

So…what’s next for me? Well, my second book, The Wrong Fairy Tale, will be out next month! Woohoo! Paperbacks for both Spirit Lake and The Wrong Fairy Tale will be available in July—exciting!

I’m working on the third installment of the Spirit Lake series, titled Freak Show, which will hopefully be out later this year. I’m super stoked for this story and can’t wait to share teasers with you guys over the summer.

I am also working on a few secret projects, including a surprise for the Spirit Lake series. I’ll let you guys know any news I can share when the time is right. πŸ˜‰

Under Development

Coming up, something exciting (I hope!) for authors/writers: an easy sign-up sheet in order to be featured on my blog. I LOVE being able to give back to the writing and reading community by featuring authors/writers and their work. I am working on a way to make things easier on me to host and on those who want to be featured on my blog. Of course, there will be some basic criteria for guest posts/features, but nothing crazy. When things are all set and sign-ups are live, I’ll make the announcement. Keep your eyes peeled for the update!

Editing Tip

Quick editing tip: Not sure about the wording for that new novel you’re writing? Take a break from writing and read your work OUT LOUD. It’s easier to catch choppy sentences and word repeats when you read aloud. πŸ˜‰

If you’re looking for a professional editor, you can contact me by clicking HERE for more information or a quote.

Well, that’s all for now. Hope you’re all having a fabulous week! And don’t forget to check out my latest book HERE.

Cover Reveal: Spirit Lake by Tamar Hela

DSCN1607 - Version 3

YOU. GUYS.

It’s here. It’s finally here.

The brand-spanking-new cover for the first book of my series in Spirit Lake, appropriately re-titled Spirit Lake (formally known as Feast Island.)

What’s so special about this book? Well…for starters, it is now traditionally published through Cosby Media Productions and Tate Publishing. It’s been completely revised for pacing and reader maturity level. The stakes have been raised, and my characters are itching to be let back out into the reading world.

I’m stoked. I’m humbled. I’m excited.

Spirit Lake will be released next month on eBook, and then the paperback will be released some time in June. The followup to Spirit Lake, The Wrong Fairy Tale, will be released on eBook in May and will also have a tentative release date in paperback some time in June. Hooray! I’ll be doing a cover reveal for TWFT next month. Stay tuned.

I’m doing some cartwheels right now.

So…without further ado, here is the NEW cover for Spirit Lake:

*Drum roll, please!*

Spirit_Lake_[2](1)

So…what do you guys think? I love it! And I can’t wait till it’s out for your reading pleasure!

Here’s the new/updated synopsis:

Six teenagers from Northern California are assigned a group project for their sophomore English class. Little do they know, this project will literally take them on a journey out of this world. Cantelia appears much like Earth, until the teens realize magic is as plentiful as the danger surrounding them. A dark and evil ruler has placed a curse on the tribal people of Sikuku Islandβ€”the same island where the teens have been transported. Now, they must help the tribal people break the curse if they ever want to see their own planet again. Alex and her companions quickly learn that there is so much more beyond their comfortable lives in Pollock Pines and its legendary Spirit Lake.

Braxton Cosby is also hosting a cover reveal for me today over at his blog. You can read the post by clicking HERE. And feel free to leave me a comment and tell me what you think of the cover—or if you have any questions for my about my book. πŸ™‚

xoxo

Ermagherd…Erm Gering Ter Bersten! (OMG I’m Going to Boston!)

It’s been a while since I’ve written and I’m not going to put myself down for that. Settling into a new position at work has been a huge task–rewarding, but there’s quite a bit on my plate. However, I have some really exciting news! I will be going to Boston, next week, and will be at quite a few events for my debut novel, Feast Island! For a complete list of events, feel free to check out my website: http://www.tamarhela.com/events/

One of my first events will be with the Brookline Public Library. Check out the details here: http://bit.ly/VRywtq

It’s still just sinking in that I’m going to these different events, speaking to people, and being asked questions about my writing process, and about my inspirations, and about my thoughts on literature. I mean, really? Am I that interesting? I sure hope so. I’m not “important” or an “anybody” in the literature world in any regard; I’m simply a girl who has followed her heart and made something uncommon happen: I wrote a novel and had it published. Either way, I am very excited about going to speak to teens especially, and encouraging them to take hold of one of my mantras: “Dream big.”

I will also be vacationing for the first time in over a year–which is much needed! One of my very good friends is getting married in Boston next Sunday and I can’t wait to see her in her beautiful dress, and have a great time with friends that I’ve known for years. After that, my mom, her best friend, and I will be making a short and sweet trip to NY and leave from there to go home. It’s going to be great.

One of my friends, whom I affectionately label as my Cabana Boy, will be traveling with me the first few days in Boston. He’s going to watch out for me and help me with all my events. Rock star material, right there! πŸ™‚ I sure hope he can put up with me, ha! And my other lovely friend, who is not able to join us on the trip, is the one who coordinated these exciting events for me! I am so grateful and can’t wait to see where this all leads.

When I visited Boston about two and a half years ago, I fell in love with the city. If I ever had to relocate to somewhere in the States from the Silicon Valley, I’d shoot for Boston. It’s just such a cool place. I’m definitely looking forward to going back and showing my family and friends a city that I love. If any of you blog followers are on the East Coast and want to meet me, I’d love to see you at one of the events! Hopefully this blog will be a little more active next week–I’ll be posting pictures and sharing stories. Until the next post, I leave you with a beautiful shot of the Charles River, during sunset, I took in 2010. Cheers!
