 Recipe from MarthaStewart.com

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for work surface
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons instant espresso powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup cocoa nibs
  • Coarse sanding sugar

  1. Step 1

Sift together flour, cocoa, salt, espresso powder, and cinnamon into a large bowl; set aside. Put butter and sugar into the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle; mix on medium until pale and fluffy. Mix in egg and vanilla. Reduce speed to low. Add flour mixture; mix until just combined. Stir in cocoa nibs.

  2. Step 2

Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface; roll into a 2-inch-diameter log. Wrap in parchment; transfer to a paper towel tube to hold shape. Refrigerate until firm, at least 1 hour or up to overnight.

  3. Step 3

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Unwrap log, and let soften slightly at room temperature, about 5 minutes. Brush with water, then roll in sanding sugar. Cut log into 1/4-inchthick rounds. Space 1 inch apart on baking sheets lined with parchment paper.

  4. Step 4

Bake until centers are set, about 10 minutes. Transfer to wire racks; cool completely. Store in airtight containers at room temperature up to 2 days.

Note: When I made these last Christmas, I added crushed candy canes instead of sanding sugar. It was tricky, but turned out great in the end!

Official Tour: Wicked Hunger by DelSheree Gladden

Book Title:  Wicked Hunger

Series:  SomeOne Wicked This Way Comes

Author:  DelSheree Gladden

Release Date:  July 9th

Genre:  YA Urban Fantasy

Length: 95,000 words/240 pages

Publisher:  GMTA Publishing LLC

Tour Schedule

Vanessa and Zander Roth are good at lying. They have to be when they are hiding a deadly secret. Day after day, they struggle to rein in their uncontrollable hunger for pain and suffering in order to live normal lives. Things only get worse when Ivy Guerra appears with her pink-striped hair and secrets. The vicious hunger Ivy inspires is frightening, not to mention suspicious.

Vanessa’s instincts are rarely wrong, so when they tell her that Ivy’s appearance is a sign of bad things to come, she listens.  She becomes determined to expose Ivy’s secrets. Vanessa tries to warn her brother, but Zander is too enamored with Ivy to pay attention to her conspiracy theories.

One of them is right about Ivy … but if they lose control of their hunger, it won’t matter who is right and who is wrong. One little slip, and they’ll all be dead.

I move to shift into reverse, but Van stops me. “Zander, you’re never late. And you’re sunburned.” She stops to wrinkle her nose. “And you smell weird.”

She waits for me to say something. I opt for silence.

“What’s wrong? Did you slip up?” she asks, her voice shaking.

“No,” I snap. She flinches at my sharp tone and I sigh. “Almost.”

“What happened?”

I almost tell her. So badly, I want to tell someone. Van is the only one who will really understand what I’m going through. But I can’t. When she told me how much she wanted to kill Ivy, I passed it off, blamed it on her hunger maturing. If I admit how close I came to ending her life myself, not once but twice now, she will be furious with me. Even worse, she’ll be more convinced than ever that this singular girl holds some kind secret to our release.

“It was nothing,” I say with a sigh. “It’s over with.”

“Zander …”

“Leave it alone, Van.”

She doesn’t say anything else, so I pull out of the parking lot and drive home. Crickets fill the warm night air as we walk up to our modest home where our grandmother waits for us. The only sound that joins their serenade is the second wooden step that creaks on our way to the porch. I have hopes of making it inside and up to my room wrapped in the same silence. That dream is dashed when Van lightly touches my shoulder as we reach the door. I freeze, fearing what she has to say.

“It was Ivy, wasn’t it?” she asks.

I don’t answer, but I’m sure she can feel the way my body tenses at the mere mention of that name.

Van sighs. “Then it’s not over, Zander. You’ll see her again. You’ll have to fight off the hunger again and again.”

“You don’t know that,” I say, hating how quiet and fearful my voice sounds.

“Just trust me on this one,” Van says. “Ivy is here for a reason.”

That’s the last thing she says before slipping past me and into the house. It takes me a few minutes to follow her in. My grandmother’s voice follows me, letting me know there is dinner in the kitchen. I mumble my thanks and walk past without going in. I’m not hungry. Not hungry for food, anyway. All I can think about is Ivy. I still don’t believe there is any design behind her appearance, but I do agree with Van on one thing. Today wasn’t the last time I’ll have to battle my hunger because of Ivy.

She’s pure, unadulterated Kryptonite to me, but I want more of her. As much as I can get. No, it isn’t over yet. I won’t let it be over.

For the people of Tunuftol, and other countries on the planet Nyssa, names found them starting at twelve months old… at the earliest. Along with the names came certain skills or powers. Depending on what you did with your powers determined what type of person you were, and sometimes affected future names. Therefore, names had great importance in Tunuftol, and Krissa had more than a few… nine to be exact. Her full name was Krissa Lysandra Rue Alverna Harley Mya Magryta Freya Wittek, which is quite a mouthful.

The dangers haven’t ended for our friends yet. The weather is starting to warm and the war started last fall is under way. Journey with Krissa and the crew as they struggle to keep their world safe and find their place in it.

The Jewel of Nirel

Chapter 1

Krissa stepped out into the rooftop garden.  Early mornings seemed the best time to enjoy the peace of her surroundings.  After a grueling winter, Krissa both reveled in and dreaded the onset of warmer weather.  She brushed a particularly irritating clump of brown hair from her face as she sat on a bench.  In the last eight months her hair had grown long once more and fell wherever it liked — while the early morning sunshine poured over the first sprouts and hints of flowers.

The war that had started last year would continue now that the weather had cleared enough for travel.  The twins — Pin and Khevin– invited her and her brother, Micah, to stay at the Fortress with their other friends.  It made preparing to leave for battle easier, but she already missed her quiet little home with Grandma Athey… even though it was only about fifteen minutes away.

Krissa closed her eyes as she thought about the upcoming struggles.  She’d locked the gateway out of Tunuftol in time to prevent their enemies’ use of it, but last fall had only given them a taste of the destruction Tunuftol could face.  Hume and Marc had shown themselves to be as caustic as their fathers, Count Zayd Rankin and Duke Tomás Hillard.

“I thought I’d find you here, Magryta,” a handsome young man with blonde hair said as he approached her.

Krissa loved it when Khevin used this name.  She had so many names now, but the meaning behind it and his voice when he said it made her smile every time.  Last year he unintentionally revealed that he’d liked her since they were small by calling to her with a new name.  Magryta meant desired and had become his special name for her.  He usually only called her Magryta in the privacy of their minds, since both of them were telepathic, but occasionally spoke it aloud.  When she revealed that she cared for him also, Khevin responded in a way to make her feel that he would do anything for her, despite his obvious position of authority as king.

I grew up in Vermont mostly and now live in Virginia with my family (those still at home). My husband and I have a blended family of seven kids. My childhood was spent moving around a lot. (non-military) About five years ago, we started home-schooling our youngest children. Now there are only two remaining in home-school. I have tried to nurture the love of books in our children and now our grandchildren — always nurturing their imaginations. Recently, I have become active in our community with literacy, starting a local (and online) creative writing club and volunteer tutoring at the Adult Learning Center.

I struggle with Fibromyalgia and PTSD. So, have to be careful not to overdo things… I don’t always listen to my own advice. I have a dry, sarcastic and corny sense of humor and always try to look at things optimistically. (again not always successful) However, I feel that if I don’t give up — for long — then things will work out for the best eventually.
